Abstract
833,683. Compression-ignition engines. RICARDO & CO. ENGINEERS (1927) Ltd. Dec. 20, 1957 [Dec. 20, 1956], No. 38908/56. Class 7(3) At least two similar combustion pockets 12, 13, Figs. 2 and 4, formed in the cylinder head or partly in the cylinder head and partly in the piston or, as shown, wholly in the piston, have fuel jets 17 similarly injected downstream into their similarly whirled air changes. Cylinder head or piston grooves 26 of unsymmetrical profile, Fig. 3, lead to the pockets air already set in rotation by the disposition of the cylinder-head inlet passage 5. The jets 17 are supplied by a single injector 11 slightly offset from and slightly inclined towards the cylinder axis, and entering an inter-pocket groove 14. Modifications. The pockets may be three vertical non-intersecting cylinders coacting with a vertical and central fuel injector, there being an overhead inlet valve. masked to create air rotation and an overhead exhaust valve. Fig. 8 shows pockets 51 having individual injectors 56, and Figs. 9 and 11 hemi-spherical and cylindrical pockets respectively. In Fig. 14 a symmetrical inter-pocket groove is provided. The pockets may differ slightly in diameter. The Provisional Specification refers to apportionment between the pockets of fuel from a single jet by means of deflecting surfaces of the inter-pocket groove and to spreading of a large proportion of fuel along the pocket walls for vaporization, and shows a number of minor constructional variations including two and three intersecting pockets and curved grooves 26, Fig. 6, leading to pockets 15 having bottoms, rising to a central point; it also refers to Specification 617,795 in connection with the use of injectors which direct up to 10% of a fuel jet upstream or towards the pocket centre either to assist starting or during normal running with more or all of the fuel so directed during starting or idling. Specification 833,684 also is referred to.
