Abstract

674,534. Diesel engines. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. March 15, 1950 (March 15,1949], No. 6557/50. Class 7(iii) Fuel injected from a nozzle g into a chamber h is, after partial combustion, delivered into a depression f in a piston b through a passage i directed or partially directed towards a point in the central part of the depression that is the meeting point of streams of air caused to flow radially from the periphery of the cylinder a when the piston closely approaches the cylinder head c. The passage, which may be subdivided into several passages uniting in a common outlet, is coaxial with the nozzle and permits an unimpeded straight-through injection of fuel into the depression. The chamber may be spherical or cylindrical. In modifications, (a) the axis of the chamber is inclined and, together with the depression, eccentric with the cylinder axis, the chamber and depression being preferably eccentrically disposed with respect to each other, (b) the axes of the chamber and passage are inclined and substantially coincide with the axis of the depression, and (c) the axes of the chamber and passage are inclined and slightly offset from the centre of a depression that is flared outwardly towards the chamber and eccentric with the cylinder axis.
