Abstract

939,066. Fuel injection engines. ADOLPH SAURER Ltd. Feb. 18, 1960 [April 13, 1959], No. 5743/60. Class 7(3). In a compression ignition engine having a combustion chamber 3 in the piston and means to cause the incoming air to rotate in the cylinder, the diameter of the combustion chamber opening is between one-third and one-half the piston diameter, the injector nozzle 10 is offset from the combustion chamber axis by between one-sixth and onequarter the diameter of the combustion chamber opening, and the fuel jet or jets 13, 13a, are injected in the direction of the swirling air so as to traverse a free path at least equal to one-half the diameter of the combustion chamber opening before contacting the combustion chamber wall. The combustion chamber may be concentric with the piston axis or eccentric thereto and a subsidiary hole may be provided in the nozzle to inject a pilot jet 15, Fig. 4, contrary to the swirling air to facilitate starting.
