Abstract
611,620. Two-stroke and four-stroke engines. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION, and STEVENS, A. H. Nov. 13, 1945, No. 30284. Addition to 596,846. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] In a modification of the method of operating an I.C. engine according to the parent Specification, which consists in injecting fuel into swirling air in the combustion space and igniting the mixture promptly to prevent the fuel vapour being disseminated more widely through the combustion space, thereby eliminating knocking, the fuel is injected in a jet along a chord of the combustion space counter to the direction of air swirl, the localised combustible mixture being ignited as soon as the swirling air blows it into contact with a spark plug. A shroud 16 on the inlet valve .14 causes the air to swirl in the combustion space and an injector 26 supplied by a pump directs the fuel jet through a nozzle 34, Fig. 3, slightly upwards and upstream of the sparking plug 24, the velocity of air swirl and timing of injection and ignition being correctly synchronised to ignite the first increment of combustible mixture blown to the sparking plug, successive increments being ignited by the flame front. The sparking plug 24 may be positioned in the side of the combustion chamber directly above the fuel injector 26, and the fuel supply may be heated by an electric coil.
