Abstract
1389383 Working cycles TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 4 June 1973 [21 June 1972] 26536/73 Heading F1B A method of operating an I.C. engine comprises providing a pre-mixed fuel/air charge in the combustion chamber(s), injecting a pilot spray of fuel into the combustion chamber(s), forming a pilot flame by igniting the mixture formed by the pilot spray, by positive ignition and igniting the pre-mixed charge by the pilot flame. The premixed charge is formed by injecting fuel from a nozzle 7 into an intake pipe 6. A fixed quantity of fuel is injected by a pilot nozzle 1, during the period 0-40 degrees before TDC and forms a rich mixture which is ignited by a spark plug 2 and ignites the premixed charge which has a fuel/air ratio about 50% of stoichiometric ratio. This mixture strength is kept constant throughout the lower power levels of engine operation, the output power being varied by controlling the amount of mixture, engine speed being constant. Thereafter the mixture strength is progressively increased from 50% to 120% of stoichiometric. In a modification fuel is injected directly into the cylinder through nozzle 7b to form the pre-mixed charge. In a through flow two-stroke engine, air is admitted through cylinder ports and fuel is injected directly into the cylinder or into the airstream upstream of the ports. An engine driven or exhaust-gas driven blower may be provided. Combustion gases are exhausted through two valves in the cylinder head.
