Abstract

936,003. Direct injection engines. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 27, 1959 [Nov. 6, 1958], No. 36364/59. Class 7(3). In an engine operating with fuel injected into swirling air, the first localised portion of fuel-air member being ignited by a sparking plug 38, Fig. 4a, to form a flame front into which successive portions of moisture are swept immediately after formation, the combustion chamber is formed by a cup-shaped recess 13 in the piston, and the spark plug 38 is located with respect to the fuel injector as defined in Specification 846,180. The inlet passage 22 tapers smoothly towards the inlet port as described in Specification 734,657 and the valve is provided with a shroud 16<SP>1</SP>. The combustion chamber may be part spherical or part-cylindrical with a flat or curved base, Fig. 1e, on which a projection may be formed. The injector valve 35 is operated by a cam 36 which may be adjusted towards or away from the stem to vary the duration of opening and adjusted angularly to vary the injection timing.
