Abstract

651,526. Working cycles: fuel injectors. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 19, 1948, Nos. 8222 and 8223. Convention dates, March 25, 1947 and April 18, 1947. [Classes 7(ii) and 7(iii)] In an engine wherein the air entering a disc-shaped combustion chamber 219, Fig. 20, through a valve 218 is given a high velocity swirl which persists during the compression stroke, a fuel nozzle 222 in the side wall of the chamber is arranged to produce a pilot jet 252 directed to be swept near the sparking plug 257 and ignited thereby to form a flame front which then ignites the fuel air mixture formed towards the centre of the combustion space by one or more main jets 253, the swirl in the combustion space sweeping the combustible mixture formed during the remainder of the injection period into the flame front. The pilot orifice is designed to give a narrow, sharply defined jet, and the main orifice a spreading jet. In Fig. 20 the pilot orifice is formed as a groove 250 in the face of a spring-loaded injection valve 240. At the beginning of injection fuel flows through the groove 250 to produce the jet 252, and as pressure builds up the valve 240 opens the main orifice 245 to provide the main jet 253. The sparking plug 257 is positioned in a recess 258 so that the sudden rise in pressure therein on ignition of the pilot jet blows the flame quickly across the combustion space to ignite the main jet 253. In a modificaton the nozzle is formed with one pilot and two main orifices 71-73. Fig. 5, in the bulbous tip 70 below the needle valve 51, and the nozzle may be arranged so that the pilot jet strikes the roof of the combustion chamber before reaching the sparking plug. A second pilot orifice may also be provided, and in a further modification having a single pilot and main orifice in the nozzle tip 70, the fuel delivered thereto is caused to swirl by an insert 110, Fig. 15, situated below the needle valve 51 and provided with a helical passage 122 leading to a hemispherical space 114 in communication with the orifices. Specification 596,846 is referred to.
