Abstract
596,846. Working cycles. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 18, 1943, No. 17117. Convention date, Oct. 23, 1942. [Class 7 (ii)] A method of and means for operating an internal combustion engine comprises introducing into the cylinder air without sufficient fuel to produce combustion, compressing the air therein, injecting fuel into the compressed air at a temperature and pressure ensuring that at least a portion of the fuel is instantly vaporized and forming a local area of combustible mixture adjacent the injection nozzle, igniting the mixture by a spark and establishing a flame front before sufficient fuel has been injected to cause knock and continuing the injection of the fuel in a narrow zone in advance of the flame front to form additional local areas of combustible mixture which are promptly ignited and burned. Fuel is injected tangentially into the combustion space through a nozzle 20, Fig. 2, directed along the whirling air stream produced by introducing the air tangentially through a shrouded inlet valve 14, the fuel being introduced at such a rate that the flame front 38 remains stationary or does not progress by more than 90 degrees of the swirl. The injection nozzle 60, Fig. 5, may be arranged radially and the swirling motion of the air be omitted, the fuel then forming a segment 61 of combustible mixture which forms a flame front which travels across the combustion chamber with the point of injection as a pivot, the nozzle delivering movements of fuel to the area immediately in front of the flame as it progresses across the combustion space. Alternatively, the nozzle may form two opposed segments 61, 68 of mixture which approach each other across the combustion space. In another form, the injection nozzle is central and narrow sectors replace the segments. The fuel may be heated to ensure that it vaporizes immediately and the control of the fuel be the sole control of the engine, a full charge of air or weak air-fuel mixture being drawn into the cylinder on each induction stroke. The method permits a low octane fuel to be used with a high compression ratio.
