Abstract

1364508 Fuel injection engines; combustion chambers M C CULLOCH CORP 9 Nov 1971 [27 Nov 1970] 52056/71 Addition to 1227641 Heading F1B A method of effecting combustion in an I. C. engine comprises generating distinct burning loci and, during a piston working stroke, progressively increasing combustion supporting gas heated by compression and combustion and transmitting it into the burning loci, generating and progressively increasing streams of combustible fuel into the burning loci the progressive increase in the fuel supply continuing so that at least the majority of the fuel in the stream passes into the burning loci. The method is applied to engines described and shown with reference to Figs. 1 to 11 of Specification 1227641. In another embodiment the slots (140) Fig. 15 (not shown) have sides parallel with axial planes. In another embodiment the tip 207, Fig. 17 of a fuel injector projects through a piston head aperture into a toroidal cavity 209 so that the fuel streams combine with the air-flows passing through passages 211 to form burning loci. In a modification of this embodiment the chamber 209 and injector tip 207 are located in the cylinder head.
