609,832. Combustion chambers. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV - UND MASCHINENFABRIK. Feb. 12, 1946, No. 4374. Convention date, Feb. 21, 1945. [Class 7 (iii)] A valve-controlled internal combustion engine, in which, shortly before the end of the compression stroke, a displacer part of the piston forces compressed air into the combustion chamber in such a manner as to produce one or more whirls having an axis parallel to that of the cylinder, is characterised in that a recess 10 in the surface of the piston having the shape of a circular segment serves as displacer part while the remaining greater portion of the piston top which is separated from the part 10 by a partition bar 12 is shaped as a pocket 5 for the valves 1, the air entering the combustion chamber through openings 15 in the bar and being guided to produce whirling at least in part by the cylindrical walls 20 of the pocket 5. The injector 7 may be positioned as shown to inject fuel in the same direction as the inrushing air, or it may be on the opposite side of the pocket to inject against the air. The bar 12 may be integral with the cylinderhead instead of the piston.
