Abstract

589,719. Two-stroke engines. DEMPSTER, P. March 28, 1945, No. 7842. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7(iii)] Two banks A, B, of cylinders 1 which are parallel to the output shaft 23 face a chamber 22 containing a swash plate 27 keyed to the shaft which is driven by the free ends of piston rods 29; the cylinders in the two banks are staggered. Balls 31 on the ends of the piston rods, are kept in contact with the swash plate by springs 33; the pistons are thus free to turn about their axes and wear is consequently reduced. A 24-cylinder engine is described and the firing order is given. A cup 34 having lateral holes enters a hole 36 in the cylinder head which carries the fuel injector, turbulence being produced. The cup also deflects the charge entering , by ports 21 from an annular passage 14 adjacent an annular exhaust passage 15.
