Abstract

19,452. Bayer, R. Aug. 24. Two - strple - cycle engines; driving - gear. - The pistons of engines which compress in the front ends of their cylinders drive a central shaft through an inclined cam 13, as shown in the Figure. Air charges enter through ports 7 in stationary pistons 6, and are transferred to the cylinders through ports 8, 9 at the end of each out-stroke. The incoming charges, which facilitate the expulsion of the combustion products, are carburetted by fuel admitted through orifices, not shown, in the transfer ports 8, 9. Prior to entering the cylinders, the air may be compressed in the pistons 6 by the aid of pistons 17, which are driven from the main shaft through a cam 20 so arranged as to move the pistons 17 in the same direction as the working piston 8 until the closing of the air-inlet ports 7. The cam 13 is flattened at its lowest extremity to enable the pistons to dwell at the ends of their out-strokes.
