23,334. Alten, Count V. von. Oct. 22. Gas and like engines.-The cylinder of a fourstroke-cycle engine is provided with an annular chamber which is cut off by the piston towards the end of the compression stroke ; an auxiliary charge is supplied to the annular chamber under pressure by means of a pump, and is fired during the power stroke when the chamber is uncovered by the piston. A multi-cylinder engine may be compounded with a single low-pressure cylinder running at a multiple of the speed of the crank-shaft. The engine shown has four main cylinders a, arranged in pairs at 90 degrees, and driving on to two cranks at 180 degrees. A single vertical low-pressure cylinder e drives a countershaft j at twice the speed of the crank-shaft, and makes four double-strokes during two revolutions of the main crank-shaft, corresponding to an exhaust stroke in each cylinder. A pump d, driven from a countershaft running at twice the speed of the crank-shaft, has an inlet valve n', and four cam-actuated delivery valves n, leading to the four annular chambers b. Valves (not shown) are provided in the connecting-pipes, and are suitably operated to admit the charge into the feed chambers while these are closed by the main pistons. The power of the engine may be varied by throttling the supply 'to the pump, and also by holding open the valves of the low-pressure cylinder.
