Abstract
29,835. Hallett, W. R. June 17, [Convention date]. Four-stroke-cycle engines.-A double-acting engine has a number of pistons selectively connected so as to form groups adapted for opposite reciprocation in an open - ended cylinder to drive two crank-shafts in opposite directions. The cylinder 2 is divided into four working chambers by means of two sets of pistons 12, 14, 16 and 13, 15, 17, connected to rods 18, 19 respectively and placed alternately in the cylinder as shown in Fig. 1, the pistons 13, 15 being adapted to slide tightly on rods 18, and the pistons 14, 16 being adapted to slide tightly on rods 19. Combustion, exhaust, suction, and compression occur in sequence in the chambers, and the inlet and exhaust to each chamber are regulated by a rotary valve 11 as described in Specification 29,823/13, the valve being mounted on a shaft 27 driven at half the speed of the crank-shafts 5 from each end.
