Abstract

613,798. Four-stroke engines. RUTHERFORD, R. July 3, 1946, No. 19961. [Class 7 (ii)] In a four-stroke opposed-piston engine, the two pistons 9, 10 operate on cam tracks 15, 15a, formed so that from the position shown, in which admission ports 6 are uncovered, the piston 10 moves to the right, but not so far as to uncover exhaust ports 7, the pistons then move towards each other to compress the charge which is fired by a sparking-plug 8 or liquid fuel injection; the expansion stroke follows, at the end of which the exhaust ports 7 are, but the inlet ports 6 are not, uncovered; the piston 9 then moves to the right, performing the exhaust stroke, and then the two pistons are moved back together to the position shown. The pistons are kept in contact with the cam tracks by suction in chambers 17, 17a produced by a pump 30, assisted, if necessary, by springs. As shown, the cylinders are arranged parallel to the driving shaft 2, but they may be arranged transversely thereto, separate cams for each cylinder being mounted on shafts parallel thereto.
