Abstract

603,720. Driving-gear of two-stroke engines. CONVERT, H. Aug. 14, 1945, No. 20905. Convention date, Oct. 20, 1944. [Class 7 (ii)] In a four-cylinder two-stroke engine having pairs of parallel opposed cylinders, steel camshaped piston bases 6 each drive the output shaft 7 through pairs of ball-bearings 8 fixed to flanges 9 set on the shaft at right angles opposite the two lines of cylinders. The piston bases are kept in contact with the shaft or the bearings 8 by air or gas under pressure acting on tail-rods 12 and admitted by pipes 13 which supply adjacent cylinders and thus equalize the pressures. The charge, admitted by ports 19, is compressed by the pistons in a chamber 24 and transferred through a space in the tailrods and ports 28 to annular combustion chambers containing spark-plugs 31 and large exhaust ports 32.
