Two-stroke-cycle engines; driving-gear. - An engine having one or more pairs of coaxial cylinders and one or more charging pumps driven at a speed which is a multiple of the speed of rotation of the crank shaft has its pumps mounted on the top of the crank chamber. I n the engine shown in Fig. 1, a pair of coaxial cylinders 6, 6<A> is charged with combustible mixture by a reciprocating piston pump 8 driven at twice the speed of the crank shaft 1 to which the crank shaft 10 of the pump is connected by chain or other gearing. The pump delivers alternately through pipe 13 into the working cylinders the ports in which are controlled by the pistons. Alternatively, the inlet ports 8<c> may be disposed in the heads of the cylinders. The main pistons are connected to the crank shaft by rods inclined to a plane containing the axes of the pump and working cylinders. A lubricating pump is mounted in the sump of the crank chamber. A single pump may charge four cylinders, and in a six-cylinder engine two pumps may be used.
