Abstract

18,793. Zeitlin, J. Aug. 18. Driving-gear.-In an engine having a variable piston stroke and in which charges enter through the crank casing, combustible mixture is admitted to the cylinders through terminal ports which are uncovered by the pistons at the end of each suction stroke but remain closed at the ends of the working strokes. The engine shown in Fig. 1 has radial cylinders and terminal inlet ports x, the variation in the stroke of the piston being produced by eccentric sheaves rotating in the big ends of the connecting-rods at one-half the speed of the crank. The centre of each eccentric sheave may be in a line joining the axes of the craiik-shaft and crank-pin when the piston is on a dead-centre, or it may be displaced by an angle not greater than 90 degrees. By varying the angle which the sheave makes with the crank, the extent to which the pistons enter the cylinders during the exhaust strokes and recede from the heads of, the cylinders during the suction strokes is determined. Specification 13,811/13 is referred to.
