Abstract

Two-stroke-cycle engines; driving-gear. - In engines in which oppositely-moving pistons are connected to a crank-shaft by rocking- beams, the arrangement of the driving-gear is such that the cylinder exhaust ports are opened by the pistons before the uncovering of the inlet ports, which close after the covering of the exhaust ports. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, two cylinders are each provided with a pair of oppositely-moving pistons connected by beams c, d through a pair of rods g to a centrally-disposed crank-shaft e the crank-pin of which is located so that one piston completes its out-stroke slightly before the opposing piston. The inlet and exhaust ports are disposed at i, h respectively. The annular chambers formed at the ends of the cylinders remote from the combustion spaces may be utilized as pumps. In a modified construction of engine, the cylinders are arranged on one side only of the crank-shaft, opposite cranks on which are connected to the lower ends of the beams. The axis of the crank-shaft is located above a line forming a tangent to the arcs moved through by the lower ends of the beams. Pump charges are compressed in the outer annular ends of the cylinders.
