Abstract

216,209. Fell, L. F. R. Feb. 22, 1923. Two - stroke - cycle engines; driving-gear. -In an engine unit in which two or more pistons 2, 3 have a common combustion space, the cranks 4<1>, 5<1>, to which the pistons are connected are set out of phase, the resulting motion of the pistons being such that, during the exhaust period, a charge of scavenging fluid is moved as a cushion to expel the burnt gases, the scavenging fluid being subsequently c o m - pressed as part of the working charge. As shown in the Figure the crank- -shaft 5 is connected by gearing 6 to, and rotates at twice the speed of the crank-shaft 4. The crank 4<1> is from 40‹ to 45‹ in advance of the crank 5<1> at the beginning of each cycle. Air or combustible mixture, compressed in the crank-case 7, is transferred to the cylinder through piston-controlled ports 8 during the exhaust and the compression periods. Liquid fuel may be injected through a nozzle 9. The piston 2 controls the exhaust port 10. The two pistons may work in separate intercommunicating cylinders, placed side by side or two pistons such as 3 may be provided, working in cylinders at an angle to the main cylinder 1. According to a further modification the pistons 2, 3, may reciprocate at the same speed, the crank 5<1> being in advance of the crank 4<1>. Scavenging air is compressed by the underside of the piston 3 against a partition in the cylinder, a further piston, connected to and in line with the piston 3 compresses air or combustible mixture against this partition, the second charge being introduced into the cylinder towards the end of the compression period.
