Abstract
170,126. Trouton, M. July 22, 1920. Two-stroke-cycle engines.-A piston b<1>, Fig. 2. moves freely in a reciprocating cylinder a, being controlled only by the cushioning of the mixture. This is forced into the cylinder at the end of the previous expansion stroke through the ports i, the fixed cylinders h acting as pump chambers. The reciprocating cylinder is connected to the crank-shaft; in its movement the cylinder controls the admission ports to the pumps. Four-stroke-cycle engines; cylinders, cushioning.-In a multi-cylinder engine there are four main cylinders a<1> - - a<4>, Fig. 1, and four auxiliary cylinders a<11> - - a<14>. The main pistons b are connected to the crank-shaft and auxiliary pistons b<1> in the cylinders a<11> - - a<14> are connected to each other and are free to move being controlled only by the gaseous pressure in the cylinders. A four-stroke-cycle is obtained in each cylinder the explosion being timed to take place when the crank is nearly at right-angles to the line through the dead centre. In a modification of this arrangement the main cylinders are double-ended and in each is a main piston connected to the crank-shaft and an auxiliary free piston, the four free pistons being rigidly connected. In another arrangement there are four pistons b, Fig. 4, connected to the crank. shaft and four cylinders a rigidly connected and free to reciprocate being controlled only by the gas pressures; the four cylinders may be back to back in pairs. In a. modification of this arrangement the reciprocating cylinders are connected to a free crank-shaft which does not transmit any work from the reciprocating cylinders. The free pistons described above may be connected to a free crank-shaft and in this arrangement the free crank-shaft may be controlled at starting.
