Abstract

In order to decrease the usual high temperature of the gases entering the low-pressure cylinder, and make the pressure on the high and low pressure pistons more uniform, the high-pressure cylinders are charged with mixture having an excess of air at a pressure considerably above that of the atmosphere. An engine for carrying out the invention comprises two high-pressure cylinders a connected to cranks f opposite to the low-pressure crank n, and a single-acting compression pump o worked from the low-pressure piston l. The pump charges alternately each high-pressure cylinder, in which a four-stroke cycle is performed, with a precompressed charge as described in Specification No. 28,827, A.D. 1902.
