Abstract

23,928. Roche, H. E. J. A. Nov. 22,1904, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Gas and like engines. - In the four - stroke - cycle engine shown in Fig. 1, a small explosion cylinder A is mounted concentrically within a larger cylinder C to which a charge of air is supplied, during the suction stroke of the piston E,. through ports B which are increased b the downward movement of the piston D. Air is admitted to the cylinders through the valve J. The respective pistons are connected, as shown, to cranks having unequal throws, and set, so that the piston D uncovers the ports B at the commencement of the suction stroke of the piston E. On the up-stroke of the piston E, and after the piston D has risen above the ports B, air from the cylinder C is forced through the valve K and carburettor H into the small explosion cylinder A. The charge is then ignited, and after the ports B are uncovered by the piston D, the products of combustion are admitted to, and mix with, the compressed air in the cylinder C. The exhaust products are expelled through the valves J, M, respectively. A modification is described in which the piston-rod of the explosion cylinder is connected to the crank-shaft by outside rods. If preferred, the engine described in connexion with Fig. 1 may be duplicated, the air compressed in the lower cylinder of one engine being passed through the carburettor and into the explosion cylinder of the remaining engine, and vice versa. The carburettor used may be of any suitable type, that in Fig. 1 being constructed of gauze and having formed in it a helical passage for the air supply, fuel dropping on to the gauze from the inlet I. The engine may be arranged to work on a twostroke cycle. Inert gases may also be used in the expansion cylinders.
