Abstract

15,012. Rumpf, M. H. July 23. Gas and like engines. - A compound engine works on the four-stroke cycle as follows :- A charge is drawn into the cylinder 1 on the out-stroke, and compressed on the in-stroke, and some of it is forced through the port 10 and valve 11 into the cylinder 2, the crank 8 of which is 80‹ behind the crank 7. The remainder of the charge in the cylinder 1 is fired on the next out-stroke, and expands in both cylinders. On the first out-stroke of the piston 4, air enters the cylinder 2, and is expelled through the port 12 by the charge entering from the cylinder 1 on the in-stroke ; this charge is compressed, and the whole charge is ignited by the burning charge entering through the port 10. On the in-strokes the combustion products are expelled through the respective exhaust valves. Two cylinders 1 may supply a cylinder 2 alternately. The engine may be arranged with two pistons connected to the same crank and moving in opposite directions. Reciprocating motion, converting into rotary.-The cylinders may be fitted with two pistons 21, 26, as in Fig. 4, which actuate one crank 25 through linkwork arranged as shown. Igniting.-The charge is ignited by contact with the exterior of a tube 14, Fig. 3, containing spongy platinum, which is kept glowing by mixture entering from the cylinder through the valve 16.
