Abstract

6326. McMahon, T. March 26. Gas or explosive-vapour engines.-A two-cylinder engine working on a twostroke cycle draws explosive charges into the lower end of the cylinders 10, 11, and forces them into a reservoir 24 provided with baffles 68 at the bottom. From the top of the reservoir they enter the combustion chamber, when the pistons uncover the annular exhaust cavities 13, 17. The charges are compressed on the up-stroke, and the cavities 13, 17 are put into communication with ports 14, 18 leading to the exhaust silencer 15, 19 by annular ports 12, 16 in the pistons. The air is carburetted in a chamber 38 containing absorbent and supplied with oil from a reservoir 34. The reservoir 24 may be supplied from the chamber 38 for starting by a hand-pump, and an auxiliary pump 52, worked through a clutch 51, may be used for a similar purpose. Ignition is effected by a rotating commutator 57 engaging at the proper intervals the brushes 60, 61, and the engine is reversed by altering the angular position of the brushes by means of a lever 64 and gear 63, 62. The brushes are opposite each other, and ignition in the second cylinder consequently occurs after half the outstroke has been performed.
