Abstract

Two-stroke-cycle engines: cylinders, passages of.-The engine shown in Fig. 1 compresses air in its crank casing and combustible mixture in a delivery passage 11 from the crank casing. At the end of the up-stroke, air enters the casing through a passage 8, port 7 in the piston, passages (i. 5. and a further passage 9 which opens into the casing. At the same time, combustible mixture enters the passage 11 through a piston recess 12a, which opens into a supply pipe 13. The charges enter the cylinders at the end of the down-stroke through ports and passages 4, 20, 9, 5, 16, 18 and also through ports and passages 11, 12, 15, 19, 18, air from a preceding charge imprisoned in the passage 15 entering the cylinder in advance of the combustible mixture. Instead of entering the crank casing through the port 9, the air may traverse a port in the piston, which port opens into the passage 4.
