Abstract

6413. Dumanois, E. P. April 15,1913, [Convention date]. Void. [Published under Section 91 of the Act.] Two- and four-stroke cycle engines. - Two cylinders, of different dimensions and arranged in tandem as shown in Fig. 1 or side by side as shown in Fig. 3, work so that the compression of the air necessary for supporting combustion in the two cylinders takes place to different degrees; that in the smaller cylinder may be sufficient for self - ignition, but that in the larger sufficient for combustion only, ignition being effected from the smaller; or expansion only may take place in the larger cylinder. One small cylinder may serve two large cylinders, and they may both work on the same cycle and drive cranks at different speeds, or the small cylinder may work on a two-stroke cycle and the large ones on a four-stroke cycle. The cylinders are provided with separate suction, exhaust, and fuel-injection valves, and they may be connected by passages such as 6, 18 which may be controlled by valves. Two-strokecycle engines may have terminal ports. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the cylinders may be further connected by orifices uncovered by the pistons at the end of the suction and expansion strokes.
