Two-stroke-cycle engines.-An engine having one or more pairs of interconnected cylinders with oppositely-moving pistons has a charging- pump a<3> located between the cylinders a<1>, a<2>, and a further pump space a<4> at the upper ends of the cylinders. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, air is compressed in the space a', and combustible mixture in the pump a<3>, the air entering the cylinders through the ports a<7>, and the mixture through the ports a<8>. Exhaust ports a<5> are located in the cylinder a<1>, which communicates with the cylinder a<2> through a water - cooled passage (not shown) terminating in ports h. The engine may be modified to work upon the Diesel principle; an additional air-pump may be arranged above and in line with the pump a<3>. According to the Provisional Specification, the strokes of the upper and lower pistons may differ.
