Abstract

Two-stroke-cycle engines; cylinders, arrangement of ports in.-In an engine having pistoncontrolled terminal inlet and exhaust ports on opposite sides of the cylinder, scavenging is facilitated by a screen of high-pressure air which is admitted through opposed ports t and deflects the scavenging-air, entering through ports f, to the head of the cylinder. The passages leading to the ports t may be controlled by rotary valves which deflect the air screen from one side of the cylinder to the other as the scavenging proceeds. By making the ports t longer than the main inlet and exhaust ports, high-pressure air may continue to enter the cylinder after the main ports have been closed.
