25,749. Kelly, T. D. Nov. 14. Gas and like engines.-A twostroke-cycle is divided into three equal periods, expansion, exhaust and scavenging, and compression. It is carried out in any engine having three cylinders 7, 8, 9, or multiples of three, driving a three-throw crank and having pumps 36, 37, 38 formed by the enlarged front ends of the cylinders, each pump supplying the cylinder next in arrear. Each cylinder has two exhaust ports 42, 45 ; the ports 42 lead to a silencer, but the terminal ports 45 open into the atmosphere and relieve the incoming charge of any resistance to scavenging. The ports 42 are covered as the corresponding pump finishes its compression stroke. The pumps draw in a combustible charge through valves 39, and moistened air through valves 20 with a spraying-nozzle 27 in their seating. The valves 20 are near the cylinder admission valves 14; the pipes 33 consequently contain moistened air which enters the cylinder before the combustible charge.
