Abstract

139,473. PrÚtot, M. Feb. 6, 1919, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Regulating.-Fig. 1 shows a two-stroke-cycle engine having an exhaust valve in the cylinder head and a terminal port L through which scavenging-air is delivered, by a fan or other apparatus, in advance of combustible mixture compressed in the crank chamber and transferred to the combustion space through a non-return valve M. Alternatively, the crank chamber may compress the scavenging-air, combustible mixture being admitted through the port L. According to a modified construction, the air-inlet port L is located above the inlet port for the combustible mixture. The Specification states that scavenging-air at atmospheric pressure may be induced by the escape of the exhaust gases. The fourstroke-cycle engine shown in Fig. 3 may compress in the crank casing air which is transferred to the cylinder through a passage M<1> for scavenging purposes and to supplement the normal charge. Alternatively, a scavenging charge may be dispensed with, air or combustible mixture being transferred from the crank chamber to the combustion space during the suction strokes to supplement a charge of combustible mixture or air drawn in through a valve S in the cylinder head. Liquid fuel may be injected either into the cylinder or into the crank chamber. Supplementary charges may be compressed in the crank chamber for a pair of working cylinders. In either two- or four-stroke-cycle. engines, the volumes of the crank chambers may be varied, to compensate for differences in the pressure of the atmosphere at various altitudes, by altering the sizes of the crank-disks, the clearance spaces in the pistons, or the dimensions of the connecting-rods. The crank chambers may be placed in communication with supplementary chambers to increase their volume. The cylinder and pump ports may be controlled by valves.
