Abstract

1535258 Two-stroke engines OUTBOARD MARINE CORP 28 April 1976 [22 May 1975 20 Feb 1976] 17357/76 Heading F1B A chamber 51, 251 is supplied with air during a first part of the piston reciprocation adjacent t.d.c. in response to sub-atmospheric pressure, isolated from the cylinder 15, 215 and crank-case 17, 217 during a subsequent second part of the piston stroke from t.d.c., opened to the cylinder on a third part of the stroke and on the final part of the stroke fuel is supplied to the cylinder. In the embodiment of Figs. 2 and 3 the chamber is subject to crank-case suction via a cylinder port 61 and piston skirt notch 63 adjacent t.d.c. and air is drawn into the chamber through reed valves 59. Subsequently the piston 19 uncovers an exhaust port 25 and a port 65 in the piston connects the crank-case 17 to the port 61, preferably just prior to opening of the chamber ports 53 to the cylinder 15, so that air in the chamber 51 is pressurized and flows into the cylinder to scavenge the exhaust gases. The piston then uncovers transfer ports (31), Fig. 1 (not shown), of transfer passages (29), open permanently to the crank-case, for flow of fuel-air mixture. In the embodiment of Figs. 7 and 11 the chamber 251 has air discharge ports 253 which are opened, for discharge of air drawn into the chamber adjacent piston t.d.c. and heated during isolation of the air from the crank-case 217, prior to communication of a piston port 275 with a mixture transfer port 257 and thus communication of the chamber with the crank-case. Mixture is drawn into the crank-case 217 from a carburetter 231 via a reed valve 235 which opens at a lower pressure than the air inlet reed valves 283. A camshaft operated valve system or a rotary valve could provide the timed communications. The air or mixture could be pumped by a stepped piston or a blower and/or a stepped piston could provide the sub-atmospheric pressure. The crank-case mixture may be produced by fuel injection into air drawn into the crank-case through the chamber 251. Air may be introduced subsequent to initial mixture introduction to the cylinder to provide a stratified charge. The engine may be cross or loop scavenged.
