Abstract

3263. Lockwood, C. Feb. 10. Two - stroke - cycle engines; crank chambers.- Fig. 1 shows an engine having its charging and explosion cylinders in line. Explosive mixture is compressed on the top side of the piston g, and during the up-stroke is transferred to the explosion chamber c' through ports i' in a hollow pistonrod i. Scavenging - air, compressed on the lower side of the pump piston, enters the working cylinder through a valve el when the main piston uncovers the exhaust ports c', into which ports water is sprayed during the passage of the exhaust gases to the crank-chamber. The crankchamber outlet port a<2> is controlled by a valve which opens at the end of the in-stroke and closes just before the opening of the exhaust ports; it is stated that this method of working facilitates the return of the piston. Additional valve-controlled ports may be provided in the piston to facilitate the escape of the exhaust gases to the crank chamber. A modification is described, in which units, similar to that shown in Fig. 1, are mounted in line on each side of a central crank-shaft.
