Abstract

4743. Leigh, H. H., [Gosselin, B. J. X.]. Feb. 25. Gas and explosive-vapour engines. -The engine works with a twostroke cycle, and the distribution of the working gases is effected by pistons p and D in tandem with the main piston P which drives a crank shaft through a connecting-rod B. The main cylinder C is in communication through the ports a with the small cylinder c w h i c h forms a combustion chamber and is connected to the igniting - apparatus by the port o when the latter is uncovered, as shown, by the piston p. At the end of the working stroke the exhaust ports E are uncovered by the piston and the spent gases in the cylinder are replaced by a fresh charge entering by the ports a from the pump cylinder V by way of the cylinder c. On the return stroke the new charge is compressed and exploded as the port o is again uncovered. The pump cylinder V at the same time receives an additional supply of explosive mixture through the ports G, as they are uncovered by the piston D and the cycle is repeated.
