Actuating pumps by fluid - pressure motors; compound piston pumps. - A two-stage air compressor worked by an internal - combustion engine comprises a power cylinder hand a compressor i at opposite ends of a crank chamber with pistons connected to opposite cranks m. Air enters the crank chamber and passes through a valve i<3> in the pis. ton i when it is further compressed and conveyed by a pipe h<3> to the jacket h<2> of the power cylinder where it is mixed with products of combustion escaping through a valve h<6> towards the end of the power stroke. The engine works upon a twostroke-cycle. Towards the end of the out stroke, the valve h<6> opens into the jacket; then are uncovered in succession by the piston the main exhaust port h<7>, an air-scavenging port h<9>, and a combustible mixture port h<9>. The scavenging air comes from the crank chamber and the mixture from a carburettor j<1> which is supplied with air from the pump i through a port i<2> which is covered by the piston soon after the beginning: of the out stroke.
