Abstract

177,667. Lincoln, J. W. Feb. 17, 1921. Valves; valve-gear.-Fig. 1 shows a two-stroke engine. The cylinder has four ports controlled by a sleeve valve i, namely a compressed-charge admission port h, an exhaust port k<1>, a transfer port l<1> from the crank chamber, and an admission port m to the crank chamber. The exhaust port opens after the crank has turned through about 135‹, and at the same time a scavenging-charge of air or combustible mixture enters by the port l<1>. Soon after, a compressed charge flows through the ports h, until the crank has turned through 50‹ on its upward path, when the port closes and the charge is compressed. The engine shown has two cylinders which are supplied by a double-acting pump, the delivery being controlled by a piston valve g. The functions of the ports h, k<1> may be interchanged. The valve i is worked by an eccentric j<3>. A four-stroke engine has the ports in the cylinder similarly disposed, and the port k serves to admit the combustible charge into a vacuum in the cylinder during the suction stroke. The exhaust port opens when the crank has turned through 125‹, to be followed by the entry of the scavenging-air from the crank chamber, the port l in the sleeve being somewhat higher than in the two-stroke engine. The sleeve is worked by an eccentric revolving at half-speed.
