Abstract
15,681. Lucas, R. July 14. Gas and like engines.-The Figure shows a double-cylinder, two-stroke, engine in which the pistons move inwards and outwards together, and give motion to separate crank shafts having balanced cranks rotating in opposite directions. A common combustion chamber is shown at the head of the cylinders, and inlet and exhaust ports controlled by the pistons at D, E respectively. On the out-stroke, air drawn in through the passage G is compressed by the pistons, and passes into the cylinders, together with hydrocarbons contained within the chamber I when the piston B<1> uncovers the ports D, the incoming charge serving to scavenge the cylinders by driving the burnt gases through the ports E. On the in-stroke, the charge is compressed and ultimately fired in the usual way.
