Abstract

Gas and like engines.-Compound engines with two or more concentric cylinders have communication ports in the cylinder walls controlled by the piston of the higber stage travelling in advance of the next lower stage piston. The high-pressure cylinder 1, Fig. 1, of a two-stroke cycle engine is charged through the valve 8 with compressed gas while the ports 4, leading to the low-pressure cylinder 5, are open. The spent gases from the cylinder 1 expand in the cylinder 5 and escape at the exhaust 13. On the return of the piston 3, the waste gases may be compressed or led away through the positively-controlled valve 6. The driving-gear comprises connecting-rods 9, 11, and a three-throw crank - shaft 27. In the modified arrangement shown in Fig. 5, the low-pressure piston-rods 16 are connected to a single crank-shaft 25. The highpressure piston-rod 20 is connected by a rod 21 to an oscillating arm 24 which is pivoted at 37 to the framing and connected by a rod 22 to the crank-pin 23.
