Abstract

Gas and explosive-vapour engines.-Fig. 1 represents a two-cylinder two-stroke-cycle engine of the type in which the piston of each cylinder pumps carburetted air into the combustion chamber of the other, and which has a common reservoir pipe opening into the combustion and compression chambers of each cylinder. Carburetted air is drawn from a pipe (not shown) through the valve q to the compression chamber a<3> of the cylinder a. On the outstroke, it passes through the valve p into the reservoir pipe o, where it is compressed, and on the opening of the inlet valve of the cylinder a', it enters the combustion chamber. The same process is gone through with regard to the pumping chamber of the cylinder a' and the combustion chamber of the cylinder a. The engine drives through crank - pin and slot mechanism, the slot being formed by bolting together the cross-heads c. The driving-parts and the fly-wheel are contained in a case b connecting the two cylinders. An oil-container v is provided for supplying lubricant from the casing b to the piston-rod glands w. Valves and valve-gear.-The inlet and exhaust valves h, i are of the oscillating-plug type and are moved through levers j by rods k and rollers k<1> operated by a cam-disk l ; the inlet valves are actuated by the inner cam-path l<1> and the exhaust valves by the outer cam-path l<2>, gear-wheels and springs being thus dispensed with. The valve casings are split and provided with lugs y and a tightening-screw y'.
