Abstract

Gas and like engines.-A double-acting, compound, two - stroke cycle engine comprises a high-pressure cylinder 1, a pump 2, and a lowpressure cylinder 3. A rich mixture is admitted to the pump from a pipe 17 by a piston valve, while piston valves 16 on the same spindle admit air through ports 12, pipes 11, and valve chambers 9 to the pipes 8. At the end of the out stroke of the piston 4, when it uncovers the ports 18 leading to the cylinder 3, the charge from the pump enters the cylinder 1, and the air in the pipe 8, being in advance, flushes the cylinder. On the in stroke of the piston 4 this charge is compressed, and the port 18 of the cylinder 3 put into communication with the exhaust ports 19. In the form shown in Fig. 4, two pumps are shown, the inner ends of which pump air and the outer rich mixture. Some of the mixture is returned to the suction pipe through valves 30 held open by levers 31 under the ccntrol of the governor.
