Abstract

111,663. Irminger, R. Nov. 13, 1916, [Convention date]. Compound piston pumps.-A charge of air for combustion in or the scavenging of an internal combustion engine or for other purposes or a charge of gas is supercompreesed in a chamber by subjecting it to the pressure in the cylinder of the engine by a premature opening of the exhaust valve. A single-cylinder engine is provided with a U-shaped pipe 22 which connects the chests of the admission and exhaust valve 17, 18. Air is forced into this pipe when the valves are closed, through a pipe 23. Towards the end of the working stroke the exhaust valve 18 opens and the air which is subsequently admitted to the cylinder is compressed. A valve 20 leads to the exhaust pipe 24, and allows the burnt gases to be expelled from the pipe 22 by the incoming air charge, if it is held open by the lever 29. The engine works on the ordinary fourstroke-cycle. Multi-cylinder engines are provided with exhaust and air chambers common to all the cylinders and situated respectively between the admission and exhaust valve chests and the U-shaped tubes.
