Abstract

23,933. Stead, W. R. T. Oct. 22. Two-stroke-cycle engines.-In an engine using crank-case compression and in which the combustion gases expand in a pair of parallel cylinders of different diameter, the cylinders being placed in communication through a valve, the crank-case comprises two chambers from one or both of which charges may be transferred to the cylinders. In the engine shown in Fig. 3, a piston valve g controls - the communication between cylinders a, b, the fresh charges entering the cylinder a through passages (not shown) containing throttle valves. After compression of the charge in the cylinder a, the valve g is opened, the charge is ignited, and the gases expand behind both pistons. The gases escape through terminal ports (not shown), and through a port controlled by the valve g. A small quantity retained in the cylinder b being compressed to the compression pressure at the cylinder a.
