Abstract

Two-stroke-cycle engines; cylinders, construction of and cooling; driving-gear.-A mixture of air and gas or other fuel is exploded in a chamber 8 and the resulting products of combustion after mixing with air in a chamber 2 are admitted to the cylinder through a valve 7<x>. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, air is compressed by pumps 15, 16 and delivered to reservoirs 10, 11 respectively which charge the explosion chamber 8 and the air chamber 2 through pipes 10<1>, 13 containing mechanically-actuated valves 9<x>, 13x. Gas under pressure is admitted to the chamber 8, in advance of air under a higher pressure, through a passage 12. A cam-actuated valve 9<x> controls communication between the chambers 8 and 2, and a cam-actuated valve 6<x> controls the exhaust of the combustion gases from the cylinder 1. The pumps 15, 16 are driven through chain gearing 17<4> and their strokes may be adjusted by varying the positions of the ends of the connecting-rods in slots 18 in the crank-disks. The pumps are enclosed in a chamber containing cooling water; air drawn into the pumps traverses cooling-coils 21. Automatic relief valves are provided on the reservoirs 10, 11.
