Abstract

265,264. Tuckfield, C., and Tuckfield, P. Oct. 5, 1925. Two- and four-strokecycle engines.-A piston valve A subject to the pressure within the combustion chamber and loaded by a spring and atmospheric pressure controls the amount of charge delivered from the crank case. Barometric devices as described in Specifications 129,663, [Class 7 (vi), Internalcombustion engines, Valves &c. for], and 171,533, [Class 114, Ships &c., Propelling &c.], can also be used on the valve to effect its movement in correspondence with the altitude at which the engine works. As applied to a four-stroke engine, air is compressed in the crank case and supplied to the cylinder as a scavenging and super-charge at the ends of the power and suction strokes. The normal inlet and exhaust valves are used. When scavenging is not required, mixture may be driven into one crank case and supply two cylinders with a super-charge. Duplex pistons may be used if high pressure is desired in the air supply. As applied to a two-stroke engine, cylinders and pistons of two diameters and controlled exhaust valves C are used. The annular pump chambers of two cylinders are cross-connected by pipes D with non-return valves E. Each crank chamber supplies its own combustion chamber, the air from the crank case passing through a carburettor B and a regulating piston valve A and the annular pumps supplying scavenging air; or the crank case may supply the scavenging air and the annular pumps mixture.
