Abstract

12,399. Chorlton, F. O. L. Aug. 28. Compression engines.-In a two - stroke -cycle compound engine in which an explosion cylinder A opens into an expansion cylinder B through piston-controlled ports D which discharge the gases from the expansion cylinder through an annular chamber G in the piston C and outlet ports H, the low-pressure crank leads the high-pressure crank by 45 to 70 degrees, or follows at it an angle of 110 to 135 degrees if the expanded gases are admitted to the upper end of the low-pressure cylinder. Gas and air are compressed in chambers K, L respectively, by an extension J of the piston E, which works over a fixed head X. The charges enter the explosion chamber through a valve F. According to a modified construction, a doubleacting explosion cylinder works in conjunction with a pair of expansion cylinders arranged in tandem. A further modification is described in which a four-stroke-cycle engine' has a slide valve located in the passage.between the explosion and expansion cylinders to shut off communication between them during the compression and suction strokes. Two explosion cylinders may exhaust into a single-acting expansion cylinder.
