Abstract
19,196. Entwistle, W. S. Aug. 28. Two-stroke-cycle engines.-The engine is of the kind in which a working cylinder A and a pump cylinder Bare placed at an angle, the underside of both pistons C, D compressing the charge in the crank case, and both pistons being connected to the same crank-pin G. The invention consists in providing, instead of the usual transfer passage, a chamber H approximately equal in volume to the volume swept out by the working piston in a stroke, and in providing an air-inlet valve J at the top of this. chamber. The charge enters the crank case by the port K and enters the working cylinder through the port M. The burnt gases are exhausted at L. The column of air compressed in the chamber H enters the cylinder in front of the charge, thus scavenging and cooling the cylinder. In a modification, the initial compression does not take place in the crank chamber, but in the chambers on the underside of both pistons, and these would be in communication with each other and with the transfer chamber.
