Abstract

Valves.-In two-stroke-cycle engines of the i:ind in which the exhaust gases are withdrawn by a pump, the engine cylinder 36 and the pump cylinder are surrounded by a cylinder 40 divided longitudinally into chambers 73, 56, 85, Fig. 5, the chambers 73 being put into communication with the cylinder 36 and vacuum pump at different periods, and the chambers 56 serving as connecting-passages between the compression chamber and cylinder. The chambers 85 contain water and extend from the top of the cylinder 40 to an annular chamber 86, the separate chambers being in communication midway by passages 85a. The cylinder 28 of the vacuum pump is actuated by an eccentric 25 and is made with ports 51, 71. 60, 77. The ports 51, 60 place the compression chamber and cylinder 36 in communication through the annular chamber 57, chambers 56, and the annular chamber 54 when opposite the ports 50, 52 and 61, 62, respectively. The ports 71, 77 place the chambers 73 in communication with the cylinder 36 and pump, respectively. In operation assuming the pistons 31, 35 to be in their lowest positions, on the first up-stroke a charge is drawn through the passage 64 and ports 61, 62 into the compression chamber, i.e., the space between the piston 35 and the diaphragm 33. On the down-stroke the charge is compressed, since the port 61 is closed, and passes into the chambers 56 where it is heated and from whence it passes into the cylinder on the following up-stroke, towards the end of which the inlet port 50 is closed. Ignition then occurs, and near the end of the down-stroke, the port 71 comes into alinement with the ports 70, 72, and the exhaust escapes into the chambers 73. During the following up-stroke, the exhaust is retained in the chambers 73, but during the next down-stroke, the ports 76, 77 come into alinement and the exhaust passes into the vacuum pump, from which it is expelled through the port 80 during the next up-stroke.
