Abstract
112,955. Matthewman, W. Oct. 26, 1916. Compression engines; driving-gear.-To enable the explosion pressure to reach its maximum before the commencement of expansion, the compression space is maintained constant for a substantial period after ignition, which occurs when the crank is beyond the centre, by a supplementary piston mounted in or adjacent the cylinder head. In the fourstroke-cycle engine shown in Fig. 1, a camactuated supplementary piston 2 is constrained so that it remains stationary during exhaust, recedes during the suction stroke, and advances with the main piston, to keep the compression space constant, during the early stages of the working stroke. According to a modified construction, the supplementary piston is mounted in a transverse chamber in the cylinder head. A two-stroke-cycle engine is described in which the supplementary piston is mounted in the end of a charging pump, the crank of which is set behind the crank of the working piston in an adjacent cylinder. Alternatively, the extra piston may be mounted in the head of the explosion cylinder. The invention is described also in connection with a two-stroke-cycle engine having terminal inlet and exhaust ports.
