Air is compressed in the part s of the cylinder b into the reservoir r, whence it is admitted through valves l', l, to start the engine and, after starting, to inject the combustible charge on to the vaporizer j on the end of each in-stroke. At the end of each out-stroke, the exhaust valve i is opened, and air, compressed in the space a<1>, passes through the chamber f and port g into the cylinder, flushes it and is compressed on the in-stroke.
