Two-stroke-cycle engines. -In a compound engine, the high-pressure piston b acts as a valve for the lowpressure cylinder c, and the port k connecting the two cylinders is so arranged that the exhaust from the lowpressure cylinder is expelled through an annular recess l in the high-pressure piston during the upstroke of this piston. The low-pressure cylinder has an inlet valve f for scavenging-air and an outlet valve g below the piston, the valve g being connected by a conduit h to the air valve e of the high-pressure cylinder a, which also has an inlet valve i for fuel or fuel and air. The compression produced in the low-pressure cylinder is approximately equal to that in the high-pressure cylinder at the moment when the two are put in communication through the port k; and the pressure in the low-pressure cylinder does not fall below atmospheric on the expansion stroke. The pistonrods are connected to cranks set preferably at 110 degrees to each other. In a modification, the valves f, g are at the upper end of the cylinder c and the port k communicates with the lower end. the cranks being at 70 degrees to each other.
